Dr. Anita Borg (1949-2003) devoted her life to revolutionizing the way we think about technology and dismantling the barriers that keep women and minorities from entering the computing and technology fields.
In honor of Anita's vision, Google is proud to announce the 2010 Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship, awarding a group of female students each a scholarship for the 2010-2011 academic year. All finalists and scholarship recipients will also be invited to attend a 3-day Scholars' Retreat at the Googleplex in 2010.
The Google Anita Borg Scholarship program is available to students studying computer science Africa, Australia, Canada, Europe, the Middle East, New Zealand and the United States.
Eligibility Requirements
Candidates must be:
· Be a female student entering her senior year of undergraduate study or enrolled in a graduate program in the 2010-2011 academic year at a university
· Be enrolled in Computer Science or Computer Engineering program, or a closely related technical field as a full-time student for the 2009-2010 academic year

Google is pleased to partner with the Hispanic College Fund to offer scholarships for computer science students!
Google HCF scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of candidates’ academic background, leadership and passion for computer science. Recipients will each receive a $10,000 scholarship for the 2010-2011 academic year. Selected students will also be invited to attend the all-expenses-paid Annual Google Scholars’ Retreat at the Googleplex in Mountain View, California in the Spring of 2010.

Did you hear about the Santa Clara Valley SWE Scholarship opportunity? They are giving a $1000 scholarship for women pursuing a bachelor or graduate degree in engineering. Envision seeks to unveil to local high school girls the world of opportunity offered by engineering and CS. The curriculum exhibits a cohesive blend of laboratory tours, design projects, computer programming, and mentorship by current UCSD engineering and CS undergraduates.

December GBM Canceled

Originally, there was a GBM for SWE scheduled on December 2. It has now been canceled. The next general body meeting will be in January.
In other news, thank you to all that attended PEI! The event went very well, as both students and company representatives had a good time.

On Wednesday, November 4, 2009, there will be a free BBQ in the EBU-II courtyard from 5-6 PM.
Right afterward, from 6-7 PM, SWE will have its second GBM in CSE 1202. Steven from BAE Systems will be holding a resume workshop at the meeting, so bring in your resumes!
Also, stop by the TESC Blood Drive this Wednesday and Thursday and help out your fellow human beings. Mention SWE, and we'll get additional DECAF points, which in turn will give us additional funding to make meetings and events all the more exciting!

Thanks to all those that came to our first GBM! Another big thank you to all those that signed up at our GBM and at the TESC organization fair, as well!
Sorry about running out of pizza, we'll do a better job next time.
Anyway, as a recap, the GBM introduced members to that importance of getting involved in pre-professional groups such as SWE.
If you'd like you can join the national chapter for $20 a year. Becoming an official member to the national group provides with you additional opportunities to find internships, jobs, and pre-professional resources. Members of the national org are automatically signed up for a SWE magazine and newsletter. The sign-up page can be found here: Join SWE National
SWE UCSD is selling T-shirts! For $15, you can own SWE UCSD apparel. Come to any of our meetings, and we'll hand you a shirt, it's as easy as that.

Each GBM this quarter will be featuring a speaker from industry talking about various elements of professional development. Cardinal Health and Northrop Grumman were represented at SWE's 1st GBM of the quarter talking about the transition from college to the work force.
